  • Since at high energies the background from down-going cosmic ray muons becomes relatively small IceCube has extended its Figure 2: Effective area for muon neutrino detection with IceCube (IC40) as a function of the neutrino energy for different zenith angle ranges of the Northern sky.
  • For up-going neutrinos the background is mainly atmospheric neutrinos generated in the Northern atmosphere, while the background for down-going neutrinos comes mostly from high energy atmospheric muons.
